Storage Solutions: Lego Storage

By Melinda Larke - The Eastside Macaroni Kid January 7, 2022

Who else is drowning in Legos? Did you get more over the holidays?   Not only have we gotten many Lego sets over the years, but I also have the Legos from my childhood, so long ago, we realized that we needed a good storage solution for all the Legos.  My husband came up with a great solution, but before we get into that, let's see what other families in the Macaroni KID community do.

A few weeks back, I put the question out on our Facebook page - "Lego help! How do you store all the Legos in your house?"   I got many great responses.    Lindsey N said   "My 12-year-old says the beige ones that match the carpet go on the floor…if we didn’t have a little excitement what are we even doing here? " Haha!   Many people use storage totes and drawers that you can get from any home improvement store or places like Walmart, Target, and Costco.  In fact, in January many stores have big home organization sales, it is almost like they know what we are trying to do after the holidays?  😂 Then there are those cute storage boxes that look like Legos, I have always loved those, but they were never big enough for us.   You can find those on Amazon, and someone mentioned that they have some at Ikea!  That may be worth the drive, that and the Swedish Meatballs.

My son's room was drowning in Legos, and I just needed a great solution, at the same time my husband got a new toolbox and had an extra one he didn't know what to do with.  That is where the idea started.  We moved the old toolbox that into my son's room and the Legos fit perfectly. Over the years as we added more Legos, we have added another toolbox.  It is still a great system after all these years. Now, if you really wanted to get organized you could sort out the drawers by color, object, etc., but we aren't that dedicated.

Now that my son is older, he is wanting to keep together the sets that he builds, so we had a new organizational challenge; where do we display the sets once they are built.  I knew for Christmas he would be getting several sets that we will want to keep together.    I looked at his bookcase and thought they were the perfect display spots, so we cleaned out the bookcases and use baseplates to put the sets on.  He can make scenes in each cube if he wants or just stack them in there as he pleases. It keeps them safe, accessible and out of my way.
